Operation
Christmas Child 2001
It has become a tradition at Chapel
Field Road that every autumn many of our congregation like to prepare
a shoe box full of toys for a child in a less fortunate country. These
shoe boxes are colourfully wrapped and then donated at a special service
during November. Many people also like to enclose a short letter and
photograph, so the child that receives the box is able to picture those
who gave it to them and to know that they are being thought of at this
special time of year.
Here are some members of our Junior Church on the Sunday when the shoe
boxes were collected. You can see some of them in the background:
All
of the shoe boxes were collected by the organisation that runs this
annual project and then transported across Europe to their final destination.
This year we know that the total number of boxes sent from Norwich was
over 22,000 and that they were all distributed in Romania. We received
a thank you letter from a boy
in a small town, so it is touching to know that our boxes arrived safely.
However it is not usual to receive a letter because normally the children
who receive boxes are too poor to be able to write back.
